December 17-19, 2007 - The National Sports Center for the Disabled will be hosting the Winter Park Open at Winter Park Resort. This event will showcase some of the finest disabled skiers in the world, many of which are trained by the NSDC competition center.

Have you ever seen empty wheel chairs at the bottom of the slopes at Winter Park Resort? Thanks to the National Sports Center for the Disabled, this is a common occurrence. Founded by Hal O'Leary in 1970, the NSCD has grown into one of the most reputable organizations of its kind in the world. The NSCD provides close to 20,000 lessons annually in over 20 different sports - from skiing, rafting, rock climbing and horseback riding to baseball, soccer and football. As the NSCD began to grow nationally in 2003, they still strive to offer more local ski lessons at Winter Park Resort and continue to recruit elite athletes to train and compete through the world renowned NSCD Competition Center.

The upcoming 2007-08 ski season marks the 24th year that the National Sports Center for the Disabled has been offering its high quality competition program to athletes with physical disabilities. The NSCD Alpine Ski Team has consistently dominated competitions throughout North America, and dozens of racers have been named to the U.S. Disabled Ski Team. This season thirty eight athletes will come from all over the world to train in Winter Park. In 2006 the NSCD competition center logged a total of 6,273 lessons and attended 25 races nationally and internationally.

The NSCD Competition Center program is not only for experts, but for people who seek to achieve their personal best, operating on both a developmental as well as an elite level. Individuals of all abilities can take part in competitive events, including camps at Winter Park, races, and training sessions across the nation. In addition to an Elite Full-time program, the competition center's Trainee Program provides two or three days of training per week. The competition center also offers a Developmental program that trains athletes once a week.

All media is invited to attend the Winter Park Open. Please contact NSCD Marketing Director Rachel Hirt at (303) 633-5802 or rhirt@nscd.org for more information.
