The
National Sports Center for the Disabled is hosting the USA
Cup, April 10 - 15 at the Apex Ice Arena, 13150 W. 72nd Ave
in Arvada. The event will feature the national sled hockey
teams from the USA, Canada, and Norway and will serve as a
warm up for the 2006 Turin Paralympic games.
Sledge hockey, more commonly known as sled hockey in the United
States, has been a fan favorite at the Paralympics ever since
it was introduced as a medal sport in the 1994 Lillehammer
Paralympic Games. Athletes with the following disabilities
compete in sled hockey: amputations, spinal cord injury, cerebral
palsy, brain injury, and stroke. The sport has been played
in the United States since the 1980's and Team USA won its
first Paralympic medal in the sport-gold-during the Salt Lake
Games in 2002.
The National Sports Center for the Disabled is one of the
largest outdoor therapeutic recreation organizations in the
world. Each year, both children and adults with disabilities
take to the ski slopes, and mountain trails to learn more
about sports and themselves. With specially trained staff
and its own adaptive equipment lab the NSCD can cater to individuals
with almost any mental or physical disability.
