NSCD-Kansas City

At the January 22, 2005 NSCD Annual Retreat, the Board of Trustees voted to move Kansas City from a Model 1 location to a Model 3 location. Much progress was made in 2005 and the outlook for continued growth in Kansas remains positive. Increased programming occurred in Kansas City in 2005 with three (3) hosted events - a golf clinic, baseball camp with the KC Royals, and a soccer camp with the KC Wizards with a total of 133 participants. A NSCD summer intern was housed with Kansas City Parks and Recreation in 2005. Through the intern, the NSCD was able to increase visibility and held a community partner meeting with 19 representatives from a variety of organizations. In May 2005, an advisory board was formed to increase local support and visibility. The NSCD also serves as the Paralympic Academy state partner for U.S. Paralympics in both Colorado and Missouri. Because of this partnership, the NSCD submits candidates from Colorado and Missouri to compete in the nationwide Paralympic Academy contest, with U.S. Paralympics selecting 10 athletes and 5 coaches from the applicants to attend the 2006 Torino Paralympic Games.
